Bullying, flood top school agenda By Meredith Blake
YORK - Bullying, laptops and the schools’ response to the floods were
on the docket at last week’s School Committee meeting.
At the meeting, the Civil Rights Team at Coastal Ridge Elementary School presented
the play it is performing called "Sticks, Stones and Stumped," which
explores the consequences of bullying.
The play, written by children’s author Deb Landry, is an interactive
lesson to teach kids how to deal with bullying in school.
"It teaches you to be a stand-byer - not a bystander," said Danielle
Garry, a student at CRES.
In the play, Bully Moose and picks on the other students and Billy Bob the
opossum, who moves to Maine from Oklahoma and has trouble fitting in because
of his accent.
The kids who starred in the performance said they believe that the play will
teach kids how to confront bullies.
This is the first year the school has had a Civil Rights Team and it has been
great, said Principal Jane Stephenson. The students have done a lot to raise
awareness about civil rights issues in the school, she added.
